What Is Black Annealed Wire
Black annealed wire — also called black iron wire, annealed iron wire, or soft annealed wire — is a low-carbon steel wire that has been drawn to size and then heat-treated through a high-temperature annealing process. During annealing, the wire is heated to 600–900°C and slowly cooled, which relieves internal stresses from the drawing process and transforms the wire from hard and brittle to soft and ductile. The result is a wire that bends, twists, and ties without snapping — ideal for manual and automated binding work.
The characteristic dark surface of black annealed wire is the iron oxide layer formed naturally during the annealing process. This is not a coating or plating — it is an integral part of the wire surface that provides basic rust resistance for indoor and short-term outdoor use.
Horizon Metal is a black annealed wire manufacturer based in Anping, Hebei — the wire mesh capital of China. We produce annealed wire from high-quality Q195/Q235 low-carbon steel wire rod, with diameters ranging from 0.45 mm to 5.0 mm (BWG 6–26), supplied in coils from 1 kg to 200 kg. Our wire is exported to 60+ countries and used in construction sites, recycling yards, mesh weaving factories, and agricultural operations worldwide.
How the Annealing Process Works
The production process is designed to maximize softness and consistency:
- Wire rod selection: High-quality low-carbon steel wire rod (Q195 / Q235, carbon content 0.06%–0.22%) is selected as the raw material.
- Drawing: The wire rod is cold-drawn through progressive dies to the target diameter, with strict tolerance control (±0.03 mm).
- Annealing: The drawn wire is placed in an annealing furnace and heated to 600–900°C in a controlled atmosphere. This recrystallizes the steel’s grain structure, eliminating internal stress and restoring ductility.
- Slow cooling: The wire is cooled gradually (typically at 50°C/hour) to prevent re-hardening and ensure uniform softness throughout the coil.
- Coiling and packing: The finished wire is coiled to the customer’s specified weight, inspected for tensile strength and elongation, and packed for export.

Exceptional Softness and Flexibility After annealing, the wire’s internal stress is fully relieved. It bends 180° repeatedly without cracking, making it ideal for intensive manual tying work at construction sites — no wire snapping mid-tie, no wasted material.
Consistent Tensile Performance Tensile strength is controlled at 300–500 MPa through precise annealing temperature management. Whether you need soft wire for hand tying or slightly harder wire for machine processing, we can adjust the annealing to meet your specification.
Cost-Effective — Lower Than Galvanized or Coated Wire No galvanizing, no PVC coating, no paint — the annealing process uses only heat, which keeps production costs significantly lower. For projects where rust prevention is not critical (indoor use, concrete embedding, short-term outdoor), black annealed wire is the most economical choice.
Excellent Welding and Tying Properties The soft, clean surface welds easily and ties securely. The wire holds its twist without springing back — critical for rebar tying and baling operations where joint integrity matters.
Smooth Surface — Won’t Damage Materials The annealed surface is smooth and burr-free, so it won’t scratch or damage cartons, pipes, or finished products during bundling — a key requirement for packaging and logistics applications.
Eco-Friendly Production Annealing uses natural gas heating with low carbon emissions. No chemical plating or coating waste. Steel scrap is fully recyclable. Compliant with EU REACH environmental standards.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: What is black annealed wire and what is it used for?
Black annealed wire is low-carbon steel wire that has been heat-treated (annealed) to make it soft and flexible. It is primarily used for construction binding (rebar tying), baling and bundling, wire mesh production, agricultural tying, and craft applications.
Q2: What is the difference between black annealed wire and galvanized wire?
Black annealed wire has a natural iron oxide surface from the annealing process — no zinc coating. It is softer and cheaper than galvanized wire but has no corrosion protection beyond basic indoor surface resistance. Galvanized wire has a zinc layer for rust prevention and is better for outdoor use. For coastal or long-term outdoor applications, consider PVC coated wire or galvanized wire instead.
What wire diameters and gauges are available?
We produce black annealed wire from BWG 6 to BWG 26 (0.45 mm to 5.0 mm). The most common sizes for construction tying are BWG 18–22 (0.71–1.25 mm). For baling and heavy binding, BWG 8–12 (2.64–4.19 mm) is typical.
Can I get custom diameters, coil weights, and wire forms?
Yes. Wire diameter, coil weight (1–200 kg), wire form (coil, cut, U-type, spool, small coil), annealing hardness, and packing can all be customized. Contact us to discuss your requirements.
Will black annealed wire rust?
Yes — black annealed wire is not rust-proof. The dark surface is an iron oxide layer, not a protective coating. It is best suited for indoor use, concrete embedding, or applications where the wire is consumed quickly. For outdoor or humid environments, we recommend galvanized wire or PVC coated wire.
Q6: How is black annealed wire packaged for export?
Standard export packing: inner plastic film + outer woven bag or hessian cloth, fully seaworthy and moisture-proof. Palletized coils, cartons, and spools are also available. All packing is designed for safe container transport.
Q7: What certifications does your black annealed wire have?
Our black annealed wire is CE and SGS certified. Production follows ISO 9001 quality management protocols. Tensile strength, elongation, and diameter tolerance are tested per batch.
Q8: What is the typical production lead time?
Standard production lead time is 7 to 15 days after deposit confirmation, adjustable based on order volume and production schedule. Exact delivery date is confirmed at order placement.
Q9: Can I order less than a full container?
Yes. We serve both full-container export orders and smaller trial or spot purchases. Contact our sales team to discuss the most cost-effective shipping option for your order size.
Q10: Do you provide samples before a bulk order?
Yes. We offer samples so you can verify wire diameter, softness, surface quality, and flexibility before placing a full order. Reach out via email or WhatsApp to request samples.
