What Is Twist Wire?
Twist wire — also called stranded wire, twisted binding wire, or multi-strand wire — is a bundle of individual low-carbon steel wires drawn and annealed individually, then tightly twisted together into a single composite strand by professional twisting machines. The twisting process gives the wire significantly higher tensile strength, structural integrity, and resistance to pulling and tension compared with a single wire of the same diameter.
Horizon Metal is a twist wire manufacturer based in Anping, Hebei — the wire mesh capital of China. We produce twist wire from high-quality Q195/Q235 low-carbon steel, available in 2 to 9 individual strands, with a combined diameter ranging from BWG 8 to BWG 24. Available in black annealed, electro-galvanized, and hot-dip galvanized finishes to suit different application environments. Our twist wire is exported to 60+ countries and trusted by construction contractors, mesh weaving factories, agricultural suppliers, and industrial distributors worldwide.
How the Twisting Process Works
The manufacturing process is designed to create a tight, consistent strand that will not unravel during installation or use:
Step 1 — Wire drawing: High-quality low-carbon steel wire rod (Q195 / Q235) is drawn through progressive dies to the target individual strand diameter, with strict tolerance control to ensure uniform strand thickness across the coil.
Step 2 — Annealing (for soft twist wire): Individual strands are annealed in a controlled-atmosphere furnace (600–900°C) to eliminate internal stress from drawing. This makes each strand soft and ductile before twisting, so the final composite wire is flexible enough to bend and tie by hand without springing back.
Step 3 — Surface treatment: Depending on the finish required, strands may receive an electro-galvanized or hot-dip galvanized coating before twisting, providing zinc corrosion protection that extends the wire's outdoor service life.
Step 4 — Professional twisting: The individual strands are fed through a precision twisting machine and wound together at high speed under controlled tension. The twist pitch (distance between each full twist) is set to maximize both holding strength and flexibility. The result is a tightly bonded composite strand that will not loosen or unravel.
Step 5 — Inspection and packing: Finished coils are inspected for strand count, overall diameter, tensile strength, and twist tightness before packing for export.

Higher tensile strength than single wire: The twisted multi-strand structure distributes pulling force across multiple wires, giving the composite strand significantly greater resistance to snap and break under tension compared with a solid wire of the same overall diameter.
Will not unravel or loosen: The precision twisting process creates a tight bond between strands. Once installed, twisted wire holds its shape and will not unwind — critical for construction binding, fencing, and structural support applications.
Flexible and easy to handle: Despite its strength, the annealed strands give the wire enough flexibility to be bent, looped, and knotted by hand without special tools. Ideal for manual tying work at construction sites.
Multiple surface finishes available: Choose black annealed for indoor and short-term outdoor use; electro-galvanized for light outdoor environments; hot-dip galvanized for coastal, industrial, and long-term outdoor applications. The right finish for your environment extends service life significantly.
Cost-effective compared with equivalent single-strand wire: Twist wire provides higher strength per unit weight than a single heavy-gauge wire, meaning you can use a lighter twisted configuration to achieve the same holding force — saving material cost without sacrificing performance.
Consistent diameter and twist tension: Automated twisting machines ensure every coil has uniform strand spacing and twist pitch, so performance is consistent from coil to coil — critical for automated tying equipment and quality control at construction sites.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is twist wire and how is it different from single binding wire?
Twist wire (also called stranded wire or multi-strand wire) is made by twisting multiple individual steel wires together into a single composite strand. A single binding wire is one solid piece of steel. Twisting multiple wires together gives the final strand significantly higher tensile strength and resistance to pulling forces — you get more holding power from a lighter-gauge twisted wire than from a single wire of equivalent overall diameter.
Q: What wire diameters and strand configurations are available?
We produce twist wire with individual strand diameters from BWG 8 to BWG 24 (0.71 mm to 4.19 mm). Standard configurations include 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 9 strands. The most popular sizes are 6×1.2 mm and 7×1.0 mm for general construction binding. Custom configurations are available — contact us with your application and we'll recommend the right spec.
Q: What surface finishes are available for twist wire?
Three finishes are available: (1) Black annealed — natural iron oxide surface, best for indoor use or short-term outdoor applications; (2) Electro-galvanized — thin zinc coating for light outdoor and indoor-damp environments; (3) Hot-dip galvanized — thick, durable zinc coating for coastal, industrial, and long-term outdoor use. Tell us your installation environment and we'll recommend the appropriate finish.
Q: Can I get custom strand counts, wire gauges, and coil weights?
Yes. Wire diameter, number of strands, individual strand gauge, overall combined diameter, coil weight, and surface finish are all customizable. Small trial orders and large volume orders are both welcome. Contact us with your specifications for a tailored quote.
Q: Will twist wire unravel after cutting or bending?
No. The precision twisting process creates a tight, permanent bond between strands. When you cut or bend twist wire, the individual strands stay locked together — they will not unravel or separate. This is the key structural advantage of twist wire over loose multi-wire bundles.
Q: What certifications does your twist wire have?
Our twist wire is CE and SGS certified. Production follows ISO 9001 quality management protocols. Tensile strength, strand count, and twist tightness are inspected per batch before dispatch.
Q: What is the typical production lead time?
Standard production lead time is 7 to 15 days after deposit confirmation, adjustable based on order volume and specification complexity. We confirm the exact delivery date at the time of order placement.
Q: Can I order less than a full container?
Yes. We serve both full-container export orders and smaller trial or spot purchases. Contact our sales team to discuss the most cost-effective shipping option for your order size.
Q: Do you provide samples before a bulk order?
Yes. We offer samples so you can verify wire diameter, strand count, surface finish quality, and flexibility before placing a full order. Reach out via email (sales@horizonmetal.cn) or WhatsApp (+86 151 7643 3852) to request samples.
Q: What is the difference between twist wire and barbed wire?
Twist wire is a smooth, multi-strand wire used for tying, binding, and general-purpose fastening. Barbed wire has sharp barbs spaced along its length and is designed specifically for perimeter fencing and security barriers. They are different products for different purposes — though both are used in agricultural and security fencing applications.
