This guide is written from a manufacturer's desk, for procurement managers, engineers, and distributors who need to get the spec right the first time. You'll learn how welded wire reinforcement (WWR) differs from general square mesh, how to read a “6×6 W2.9” callout, which coating survives a coastal site, and where the buying mistakes actually happen.
Most welded wire mesh orders that get rejected at a US jobsite weren't built wrong — they were specified wrong. The same product name covers two different product families, and a one-line RFQ error can mean a container of the wrong steel.
This guide is written from a manufacturer's desk, for procurement managers, engineers, and distributors who need to get the spec right the first time. What Is Welded Wire Mesh, Really?
Take a grid of steel wires and fuse every crossing with electric resistance welding. That's welded wire mesh. The weld isn't a clamp — it's a fused metal point, and that changes everything about how the panel behaves.
Cut one panel open and the difference shows immediately. A welded sheet keeps its shape; a woven sheet's wires start sliding out of the cut edge. That's why welded mesh is the default for concrete and security work, not woven.
| Welded Wire Mesh | Woven Wire Mesh | |
| At the junction | Fused point | Wires interlace |
| Cut the edge | Holds shape | Unravels |
| Stays square? | Yes | Drifts |
| Where you'll use it | Slabs, fences, cages | Screens, filters |

Field data from weldedwirefence.com.cn (May 2026) puts a single 6×6 weld junction at 700+ lbs of shear. That rigidity is the whole point.
Welded Wire Reinforcement vs Square Welded Wire Mesh
Here's the confusion that burns buyers: “welded wire mesh” is used for two products that should never be swapped.
Welded Wire Reinforcement (WWR) — old name “welded wire fabric,” or WWF — is concrete's reinforcement. ASTM and the Wire Reinforcement Institute dropped “WWF” for “WWR” because the product's job is structural, not just fabric (ASTM A1064/A1064M-24, astm.org). It runs on a strict W-number system and must meet ASTM A1064.
Square welded wire mesh is the general-purpose stuff: fences, animal pens, filtration, garden frames. No mandatory ASTM reinforcement standard. Sold by opening size and gauge.
| WWR / WWF | Square Welded Wire Mesh | |
| Built for | Concrete slabs | Fences, cages, filters |
| How it's called out | 6×6 W2.9 | 2″ opening, 14 ga |
| Standard | ASTM A1064 | None required |
| Common grids | 4×4″, 6×6″, 6×8″ | 1/4″–6″ openings |
| Paperwork | MTR + ASTM | Optional |
| What drives price | Steel area + coat | Gauge + finish |

Quick triage — three questions:
- Does the steel go inside poured concrete? → WWR.
- Is the spec “6×6 W2.9” or does it cite ACI 318? → WWR.
- Fence, cage, or screen? → square mesh.
We've seen the failure mode firsthand: a buyer ordered square mesh for a slab, the inspector kicked it back for missing ASTM A1064 docs, and the fix ran a 15% premium while stretching service life about 4×The product wasn't bad. The spec was.
Wire Mesh for Concrete — Specs That Actually Matter
On concrete, the W-number isn't decoration. The “W” means cross-sectional area in hundredths of a square inch: W2.9 = 0.029 in², W4.0 = 0.040 in² (ASTM A1064/A1064M-24).
Stock designations you'll see on US quotes (moiminerals.com, Apr 2026):
| Callout | Where it goes |
| 6×6 W1.4/W1.4 | Light residential slabs |
| 6×6 W2.9/W2.9 | Driveways, patios |
| 4×4 W4/W4 | Warehouse, industrial floors |
| 6×6 W4/W4 | Bridge decks, heavy load |
Matching grid to job:
| Project | Slab | Grid | W-number | Note |
| Driveway | 4–5″ | 6×6″ | W2.9 | Baseline |
| Garage / shop | 5–6″ | 6×6″ | W4.0 | Vehicle load |
| Industrial floor | 6–8″ | 4×4″ | W4.0+ | Forklifts |
| Bridge deck | 8″+ | PE-designed | W8.0+ | Engineer sign-off |

Placement is where slabs fail. ACI 318 puts the mesh in the upper third of the slab — roughly 2″ down in a 6″ pour (tarmacview.com WWR glossary). Chairs every 3–4 ft. The classic jobsite mistake: crews walk the sheet to the bottom of the pour, where it does almost nothing for cracking. Lap at least one square or 6″, whichever is larger.
Welded Wire Mesh Materials — Match the Coating to the Site
This is where lifetime cost is decided, not where you sign the PO. Six options reach the US market:
| Material | Stops rust? | Use it where | Cost | Life |
| Bare black steel | Poor | Indoor, short job | $ | 5–10 yr |
| Electro-galv (EG) | Fair | Indoor / light out | $$ | 10–15 yr |
| GAW (galv after weld) | Excellent | Outdoor, coast | $$$ | 25–40 yr |
| PVC over galv | Excellent+ | Pens, coast, garden | $$$ | 20–30 yr |
| 304 stainless | Superior | Food, chemical | $$$$ | 50+ yr |
| 316 stainless | Superior+ | Salt spray | $$$$$ | 50+ yr |
The line every quote hides: GBW vs GAW. Galvanized Before Welding coats the wire, then the weld burns the zinc off at every junction — those points go first. Galvanized After Welding (GAW) dips the finished panel, so the welds are covered too (moiminerals.com, Apr 2026; Riverdale Mills GAW process).
For kennels or coastal sites, don't accept GBW. Zinc under 1.5 oz/ft² on GBW fails in about two years where urine or salt hits it.
The 5 Mistakes That Cost Buyers Real Money
1. GBW outside. No zinc at the welds. Coastal and wet sites rust in two years.
2. WWR confused with square mesh. No ASTM paper → rejected → re-order at a premium.
3. Mixed gauge languages. “12 ga” on the RFQ, “W4.0” on the drawing — not the same wire. 12 BWG ≈ 2.77 mm; W4.0 ≈ 0.225″ diameter. Someone eats the difference.
4. No MTR check. Material Test Reports and batch codes let you verify yield and coating weight. Skip them and you're trusting the label.
5. Volume left to the last minute. A 50 ft trial order can run 3× the per-unit price of a full container. Know your volume before you ask for numbers.
How to Read a Wire Mesh Specification
Three systems show up on quotes. Miss one and the RFQ comes back wrong.
- BWG gauge: bigger number, thinner wire. 23 ga ≈ 0.025″, 14 ga ≈ 0.080″.
- W-number: area × 100. W2.9 = 0.029 in².
- Metric (mm): what most overseas mills actually run.
| BWG | Diameter (in) | ~W-number | Diameter (mm) |
| 23 | 0.025 | — | 0.64 |
| 19 | 0.042 | W1.4 | 1.07 |
| 14 | 0.080 | W4.0 | 2.03 |
| 12 | 0.105 | W5.5 | 2.67 |
Your RFQ needs seven fields, every time:
- Opening size
- Wire diameter (gauge or mm)
- Panel / roll dimensions
- Material + finish
- Quantity
- Standard (ASTM A1064 if it's WWR)
- Incoterms + destination port
Where to Buy Welded Wire Mesh — Factory or US Distributor
Two channels, two jobs. Pick on volume and clock.
| Factory direct | US distributor | |
| Order size | Full container typical | By sheet / roll |
| Price | 30–50% lower | Higher, freight in |
| Timing | 35–50 days by sea | 3–7 days off shelf |
| ASTM docs | On request | Usually stocked |
| Custom? | Yes | Limited to inventory |
| Best for | Big jobs, repeats | Small lots, urgent |
Industry-wide, a full 20 ft container is the freight sweet spot; LCL can bring the floor down for standard stock. Domestic houses like Wire Cloth Man and Lawrence Sintered Metals carry same-week inventory.
HORIZON METAL manufactures and exports ASTM A1064-compliant WWR with DDP US door-to-door quoting. MOQ, lead time, and sample terms are confirmed per project — talk to our team about your volume.
What to Do Next
Buy welded wire mesh by fixing the end use first. Concrete means WWR with ASTM A1064 and a W-number; fences and filters mean square mesh with no standard attached. Outdoor or corrosive? GAW, not GBW.
Send a full seven-field RFQ and demand the MTR before you award. Big job → container direct. Urgent fill → US stock.
HORIZON METAL reviews your specification free and returns a DDP quote with certification inside 48 hours.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between WWR and welded wire mesh?
WWR is concrete reinforcement governed by ASTM A1064 with a W-number system. General square mesh is for fences, cages, and filters with no mandatory standard.
What gauge welded wire mesh for a concrete driveway?
A 4–6″ residential driveway takes 6×6 W2.9/W2.9. Move to 6×6 W4.0/W4.0 for garage or shop floors (moiminerals.com, Apr 2026).
Galvanized before vs after welding — which?
GAW, always, outdoors. GBW burns zinc off at each weld, leaving bare steel that rusts first (moiminerals.com; Riverdale Mills).
How do I read “6×6 W2.9/W2.9”?
6×6 is spacing in inches. W2.9 is 0.029 in² per wire — about 0.148″ diameter, or 8 gauge.
Can welded wire mesh be used for fencing?
Yes. For permanent outdoor fence, specify GAW or PVC-coated mesh.
Does HORIZON METAL provide ASTM A1064 certification and MTR reports?
Yes. WWR shipments include ASTM A1064/A1064M compliance documentation and Material Test Reports with batch traceability.
