Copper mesh is a conductive metal fabric used for RF shielding, compatible filtration duties, screening and decorative panels. For buyers, the difficult part is rarely identifying copper. It is choosing an opening, wire diameter and construction that will work in the finished assembly.
A request for “100 mesh copper” leaves several questions unanswered. How large should the openings be? Does the screen need to carry a pressure load? Will it be bonded into a shielding enclosure, or fitted into a removable filter? Those details can change the specification—and the price.
This guide explains how to select woven copper mesh and what to include in an enquiry. If you already have a drawing, see Horizon Metal’s copper mesh product page alongside the selection notes below.
What Is Copper Mesh?
Woven copper mesh is made by interlacing copper wires in the warp and weft directions. A plain weave produces a regular pattern of square openings. The resulting wire cloth combines electrical conductivity with open space for airflow, visibility or the passage of a compatible fluid.
Pure copper is soft and readily formed, which helps when fitting mesh around a frame or making a shaped screen. That softness also means a fine mesh can stretch, crease or distort during handling. Copper should not be selected on conductivity alone when the part also needs stiffness or abrasion resistance.
Woven, knitted and expanded copper mesh are different products
- Woven copper mesh: intersecting wires form measurable openings. It is the relevant construction when aperture size matters.
- Knitted copper mesh: interlocking wire loops create a flexible, compressible structure. It is commonly supplied for packing, gap filling or suitable shielding components.
- Expanded copper mesh: copper sheet is slit and stretched into an open pattern, commonly with diamond-shaped openings.
These constructions are not interchangeable. A knitted copper packing material does not have the same controlled square aperture as woven wire cloth. Include the construction in the purchase specification rather than relying on the word “mesh.”
Specify the copper grade, not just the color
“Red copper” generally distinguishes unalloyed copper from yellow brass, but it is not a complete material specification. Horizon Metal’s product page describes its red copper wire mesh as woven from 99.9% pure copper wire. If your drawing requires a particular alloy designation or temper, confirm that requirement separately with the supplier.
For reference, the Copper Development Association lists C11000 electrolytic tough-pitch copper with a minimum copper content of 99.90%, including silver. A stated purity alone does not establish compliance with every requirement for that alloy. Request material documentation when the grade is part of your acceptance criteria.
Copper Mesh Specifications: Why Mesh Count Is Only the Starting Point
For regular Square Wire Mesh, mesh count describes the number of pitches per linear inch. Wire diameter determines how much of each pitch is occupied by metal. Two meshes with the same count can therefore have different openings, different open areas and different handling characteristics.
Nominal opening size in millimeters = 25.4 ÷ mesh count − wire diameter in millimeters.
For example, a 100 mesh screen has a nominal pitch of 0.254 mm. With 0.10 mm wire, its calculated opening is 0.154 mm, or 154 microns. With 0.12 mm wire, the opening is 0.134 mm, or 134 microns. Both are called 100 mesh, but they are not equivalent screens.
For a square mesh with the same wire diameter in both directions:
Nominal open area (%) = [opening ÷ (opening + wire diameter)]2 × 100.
| Mesh count | Wire diameter | Nominal opening | Opening in microns | Nominal open area |
| 20 × 20 | 0.30 mm | 0.970 mm | 970 µm | 58.3% |
| 40 × 40 | 0.20 mm | 0.435 mm | 435 µm | 46.9% |
| 60 × 60 | 0.15 mm | 0.273 mm | 273 µm | 41.7% |
| 100 × 100 | 0.10 mm | 0.154 mm | 154 µm | 36.8% |
| 100 × 100 | 0.12 mm | 0.134 mm | 134 µm | 27.8% |
These figures describe nominal geometry. Actual cloth must be assessed against the agreed tolerances. The formulas do not apply directly to knitted mesh, Dutch weave or irregular expanded openings.
The last two rows show a useful purchasing trade-off: thicker wire reduces the opening and open area at the same mesh count. It may improve handling strength, but it also changes flow resistance. For filtration, an opening dimension is not an independently verified absolute retention rating; particle shape, operating conditions and the test method still matter.
Where Copper Mesh Works—and What to Check First
EMI and RF shielding
Copper’s conductivity makes it a useful material for conductive screens in RF shielding assemblies. Mesh can allow ventilation or visibility where a solid sheet would obstruct them. The mesh is one component of the enclosure, however, and its performance depends on how it is installed.
Before selecting a copper mesh for shielding, establish the frequency range and the required attenuation in decibels. Then review the opening size, panel dimensions, perimeter bonding, seams, doors, cable penetrations and ventilation paths. A narrow unbonded seam can compromise an otherwise well-specified screen.
Smaller openings can help control RF leakage, but a mesh count does not establish a guaranteed shielding value. Ask for test results that identify the frequency range, specimen arrangement and test method. Results from a small coupon should not be treated as proof of a completed room or cabinet.
Copper mesh is also not a universal solution for low-frequency magnetic fields. A problem involving a static magnetic field or 50/60 Hz magnetic interference needs a separate shielding assessment. Electrical bonding and any required grounding should follow the enclosure design and applicable electrical requirements.
Filtration and particle screening
Woven copper mesh can be used to screen solids or strain compatible liquids where copper’s material properties are needed. Start with the target opening and process chemistry, then check the wire diameter, open area, support structure and cleaning method.
Fine copper wire cloth needs particular attention to pressure differential. An unsupported screen can deform, changing its openings or pulling away from an edge. If the filter has a backing layer or frame, specify that assembly rather than buying the filtering mesh in isolation.
Copper is not the default choice for every industrial fluid. For a process that needs greater mechanical strength or a different corrosion profile, compare stainless steel wire mesh and select the alloy against the actual medium, temperature and cleaning chemicals.
Architectural screens and decorative panels
Copper mesh has a warm metallic appearance that changes with exposure. A new screen may darken before developing other patina colors; the rate and final appearance depend on moisture, pollutants, handling and surface treatment.
For a visible installation, approve a physical sample and define whether natural aging is acceptable. Also agree on panel support, edge treatment and the viewing direction. A small swatch can hide waviness that becomes obvious across a large unsupported panel.
If a coating is proposed to preserve the finish, review its effect on the intended function. A decorative protective coating may interfere with electrical contact at a shielding connection.
Copper Mesh vs. Brass, Phosphor Bronze and Stainless Steel
Suppliers sometimes group copper and copper-alloy meshes together. That is convenient for browsing, but the materials should be separated in a drawing or order.
| Material | Why consider it? | What needs checking? |
| Pure copper | High electrical conductivity, easy forming and copper appearance | Softness, aperture distortion, chemical compatibility and electrical connections |
| Brass | Copper-zinc alloy; useful when appearance and greater stiffness than soft pure copper are priorities | Exact grade, lower conductivity than pure copper and compatibility with the environment |
| Phosphor bronze | Copper-tin-phosphorus alloy; often considered for spring properties and wear resistance | Alloy and temper, conductivity requirements and service conditions |
| Stainless steel | Often considered for robust screening and filtration assemblies | Grade-specific corrosion behavior; substantially lower electrical conductivity than copper |
The Copper Development Association’s C51000 phosphor bronze data provides a grade-specific reference for the copper-tin-phosphorus alloy family. Do not substitute brass or phosphor bronze for pure copper without checking the properties the part actually needs.
Corrosion, Cleaning and Handling
Copper can perform well in many atmospheric exposures, but “corrosion resistant” does not mean compatible with every chemical. Oxidizing acids, ammonia-containing media and other aggressive environments need a specific compatibility review. Thin wires have little cross-section to spare if corrosion occurs.
Where copper contacts another metal in a wet assembly, assess galvanic corrosion. The metal pairing, electrolyte and relative exposed areas influence the result. Isolation may be appropriate in a decorative assembly, while a shielding assembly may require a deliberately engineered conductive connection.
Keep mesh dry in storage and protect it from contamination. Handle fine cloth with clean gloves and support it while cutting. Avoid pulling a sheet into shape by its corners: that can skew the weave. Choose cleaning agents for the copper grade and service requirements, and trial the method on a sample before treating a finished part.
What to Specify Before Ordering Copper Mesh
A useful enquiry gives the supplier enough information to quote the same part that engineering expects to receive. Include:
- Material: pure copper or a named copper alloy, required grade, temper and any material certificate requirement.
- Construction: woven, knitted or expanded; for woven cloth, specify the weave.
- Geometry: mesh count in both directions, wire diameter, required opening and acceptance tolerances.
- Finished size: roll width and length, or part dimensions, quantity and dimensional tolerances.
- Edges and support: cut-edge condition, frame, backing layer, fastening method or drawing references.
- Operating conditions: fluid or atmosphere, temperature, pressure differential and cleaning method.
- Functional acceptance: filtration test requirements, or shielding frequency range, attenuation target and test arrangement.
- Inspection and packing: agreed defect criteria, inspection records and protection against creasing or moisture.
Example enquiry: “Please quote plain-woven pure copper mesh, 100 × 100 mesh per inch, 0.10 mm wire diameter, nominal opening 0.154 mm, cut sheets 500 × 500 mm, quantity 100. Please confirm the available copper grade and temper, opening and sheet-size tolerances, edge condition, material documentation and packing method.”
This is a geometry example, not a shielding or filtration performance specification. Add the application requirements before placing an order. If you only have an old sample, provide measured dimensions and request confirmation of the material; color alone is not enough to identify the alloy.
Copper Mesh FAQs
What is copper mesh used for?
Common uses include conductive RF screens, compatible filtration and screening duties, and decorative panels. Woven mesh is useful where a defined opening is needed; knitted mesh is a different construction used where flexibility or compressibility matters.
What size is 100 mesh copper?
A 100 mesh square weave has a nominal pitch of 0.254 mm. Subtract the wire diameter to calculate the opening. With 0.10 mm wire, the nominal opening is 0.154 mm; with 0.12 mm wire, it is 0.134 mm.
Can copper mesh block Wi-Fi signals?
A properly designed conductive enclosure using copper mesh can attenuate RF signals, including Wi-Fi frequencies. An isolated mesh panel or a poorly bonded enclosure does not guarantee a particular reduction. Specify the operating bands and test the completed assembly.
Does copper mesh rust?
Copper does not form the iron rust associated with steel, but it can oxidize, tarnish and corrode. Appearance changes in air are different from compatibility with a process chemical, so evaluate the intended environment separately.
Is copper mesh better than stainless steel mesh?
Copper is usually the more relevant starting point when electrical conductivity is central to the design. Stainless steel is often considered when strength, wear or process compatibility carries more weight. Compare the actual grades, wire sizes and service conditions.
Which copper mesh should I buy for a Faraday cage?
There is no single mesh count that suits every Faraday cage. Selection depends on frequency, required attenuation, enclosure geometry and electrical continuity. Specify the mesh together with the seams, door contacts, penetrations and acceptance test.
